Indicate source.
Vesicular lesion, Open cervical lesion with a sterile swab. Open oral, genital, and skin lesions with a 27 gauge sterile needle.
Ulcerative lesions, remove any pus from the lesion with a sterile swab.
Dried lesions are acceptable but not preferred. Lift the crust from the lesion with a sterile needle.
Sputum, bronchial washings, and endotracheal aspirates should be mixed in a 50/50 ratio with the viral transport media using sterile technique.
Neonatal Screening: 4-5 sites with different swabs, submit all swabs into one transport media container.
Submit to lab as soon as possible.

Unacceptable Conditions
Body fluid/CSF >2 hours after collection.
Viral Transport Media: >72 hours old.
Blood in the media may inhibit viral replication.
Additional Information
Positive cultures are typed for HSV I/II. For Neonatal Screen, only place 1 order, all swabs collected from different sites are placed in 1 media container. Add comment detailing sites collected.
