Department

CHEMISTRY

Primary Collection Container

Green PST (Lithium Heparin)

Alternate Collection Container

Green Microtainer PST

Transport

Refrigerated

Preferred Transport Temperature

Refrigerated

Processing

Centrifuge and refrigerate.

Separate from cells if testing is delayed more than 2 hours.

Refrigerated: 72 hours

Frozen: unacceptable

Minimum Testing Volume

0.1 mL

Reference Range

<0.201 mg/dL

Methodology

Polystyrene particles coated with monoclonal antibodies specific to human CRP are aggregated when mixed with samples containing CRP. These aggregates scatter a beam of light passed through the sample. The intensity of the scattered light is proportional to the concentration of the respective protein in the sample. The result is evaluated by comparison with a standard of known concentration. Siemens Dimension Vista.

Performed

Sunday – Saturday

Reported

As completed

CPT Codes

86141

Unacceptable Conditions

Gross hemolysis.

Additional Information

CRP values are known to fluctuate in both stable heart disease and in healthy individuals. Extrapolation of CRP data from selective clinical studies to the broad clinical setting may be problematic when attempting to stratify coronary risk from a single CRP value. Multiple measurements of CRP and correlation with other clinical measurements of cardiac risk is recommended.
