Department
CHEMISTRY
Collection Requirements
This is the standard 2 hour glucose tolerance test used in the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus in children less than 12 years old.
8 hour fast is required
Patient should be on a high carbohydrate diet for 72 hours prior to the test.
Draw the fasting glucose as soon as possible after patient’s arrival.
The prepared dextrose dose must be calculated in patients less than 94 lbs. If starting with a standard size prepared dextrose bottle of 100gms/10oz, then the calculation is as follows: Patient weight in lbs. X 0.08 = ounces of prepared dextrose. Maximum prepared dextrose dose is 75gm (7.5oz.). Record Grams of dextrose given on Tolerance worksheet, Oz of glucola x 10 = Grams. If using a non-standard size bottle of prepared dextrose, phone the Chemistry Section (989-583-6782) for help in calculating the proper dose.
Verify each collection for the exact draw time. Do not accept default draw times.
