Collection Requirements

Genital Swab:

Endocervical, or vaginal female swab only.

Use the large woven polyester swab in the cobas PCR Dual Swab Sample Kit or an equivalent device to remove cervical secretions and discharge before obtaining the endocervical specimen.

Use only the flocked swab in the cobas PCR Media Dual Swab Sample Kit to collect endocervical specimens.

Use only the woven polyester swab in either the cobas PCR Media Uni Swab Sample Kit or the cobas PCR Media Dual Swab Sample Kit to collect vaginal swab specimens.

Urogenital specimens (swabs) from patients who have used carbomer-containing products may generate invalid results. Care givers should refrain from using carbomer-containing products as a lubricate before (pelvic exam) or during the collection process. Patients should refrain from using feminine hygiene products for approximately 24 hours prior to their scheduled visit.

If patient is known to be using feminine hygiene products at the time of collection, a urine sample may be considered.

Urine:

Female patients should not cleanse the labial area prior to providing specimens.

DO NOT collect specimen from patients who are menstruating.

Female and male patients should not have urinated for at least one hour prior to sampling.

First catch urine samples are recommended.

Use care to avoid splashing of contents.

If urine is received in a sterrile cup, then transfer to Cobas PCR media using pipette proved in collection kit. (Only if within 24 hours of collection)

Stability in Roche cobas PCR Transport medium.

Ambient: 24 hours
Refrigerated: 24 hours

Specimens submitted in swab transports with swabs, swabes in gel, dry swabes, and swabs in bacterial transport medium (e.g., Culturettes) will not be tested.

Urine specimens where the liquid level in the urine transport tube does not fall between the two black indicator lines will not be tested.
